“A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so also you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another. “
This week as I was chatting to my best friend we were discussing the fact of how we sometimes take our families and friends for granted and fail to show them God’s love for them through us as his vessel’s. The question that came out of our discussion was “Do we show people Christ by our love?”
This question for me struck deep because it made me question whether the life I live shows and draws people to christ. Can I truely say that people say that I am his disciple by my love for his people and my brothers in Christ? I wanna be one that when people look at see joy and hope, see Christ and his love.
My biggest fear has always been that I wouldn’t be able to show my family and friends how I truely love them before its too late. The more I look at this scripture it makes me realise that the love that people will see in me for them is not of my own works or efforts but rather out the overflowing and abundance of the love that I have received from God through Christ. This for me gives me peace and joy but also urges me to look closely at my lifestyle and consider and judge whether it shows people the love that I have received?
My best friend’s dad said something to me a couple of weeks ago that has really stuck with me which is very relevant to this discussion He said that we can never learn to love others or See Christ in them unless we see and believe how much we are truely loved and forgiven. You can’t give others things that aren’t of your possession or ownership.
Well, you’re probably thinking how I really know if God loves and cares for me at all? Just read this scripture and you will find your answers right here……
Jesus Prays for All Believers
“My prayer is not for them alone. (Meaning the disciples) I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one,Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” ( John 17)
But then your question would be how do I show people that I love them without making it a task and burden? Well, that’s just it love isn’t a lists of do and don’ts as the world makes it out to be but rather the display of who God is.
What is love?
God is love!!!!
His very essence and being is love, He doesn’t just have the attributes of love but rather that He is the true expression and image of Love.
“Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God’s love was revealed among us: God sent His one and only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him. And love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:7)
“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always persevere. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.”
“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love !!!!!!”
